There seems to be a bug here. You might see >>507 (and most likely, this post as well) on the homepage but you can't access it on this thread's page.

It just seems to be a bit slow on the updating is all

You should probably try to take it up with the sites owner, not with random passerby anons.
it kinda cheers me up that someone's making a fuss over a somewhat minor hiccup on a dead imageboard, makes it feel less dead

Thanks, but understanding is not the solution here, unfortunately. I've been in this industry for about 10 years now and this problem never fully went away from the beginning.

hey /kind/ with the site going down, and hopefully updating soon, this is a great chance to improve our board.

so while we sit here in our bunker and wait for this all to blow over; why don't we come up with some ideas of how to encourage more serious discussion on /kind/ as well as ways we can help people?

I'll probably start (selectively) advertising /kind/ when we finally migrate over to infinity next. I'd rather do the advertising on my own, but feel free to leave a link to our board, and tell them about us if you happen upon a shill thread on some other imageboard that you believe has a good userbase.

If you didn't know already, /kind/ used to have weekly streaming nights, but our old streamer had to quit due to real world obligations. Needless to say, I need to find a new streamer. I have no leads. Please speak up if you're interested in becoming /kind/'s new streamer or know where I should start looking for one.

The mascot thing. I don't know what to do. Some people want to use a pre-made character, and some others want an original character (guess I'm on the OC side). Now it seems like people have given up on the idea. Thought about commissioning a professional artist, but I don't know.

Also, I had an idea for a project we could work on together. I don't really have a coherent plan yet, so I'll keep what it is to myself for now.

No.464

About the mascot thing, do we really need one? If we did I think Akari is the best choice.

>>464
Holy shit, dude. I completely misread your post. My bad.

>do we really need one?

I hate repeating myself, so I'll just copypaste what said some time ago.

>There's no need for a mascot to begin with, this was just meant to be a fun project that promotes the kindness found in creativity. I also think working together on a project like this would promote a sense of togetherness and community on /kind/. This is all voluntary of course.

I could also use it for shilling the /kind/ brand (for lack of a better term).

Also, not everyone on /kind/ is a weeb, so generic moeblob #9927 is culturally irrelevant or even offputting to some.

I havent checked the mascot thread but in that case a cat mascot is the best bet.

I believe 7chan has a male cat mascot. So we know it definitely doesn't need to be a little girl.

Honestly, what do you think about a compromise? Having two mascots, I mean.

Moeblob, and the most popular OC.

>can someone explain
I don't know the exact details, but the main problem is that 8chan's software relies on the hard drive too much. The boards, threads, etc. are all static files generated, and written to disc, every time you post.

The problem is, hard drives are very slow. They are mechanical, so you have to wait until the disc actually rotates where you want to write the file, and in servers, they usually do extra work too, like duplicating everything so you can restore data if one of the drives die. But worst is, you have to wait until you have finished writing to a file if you want to write to it again, even if you would overwrite it, which can really slow down updating the front page, for example.

So they started to rewrite the software to dynamically generate the content every time you visit a page, instead of writing static files. This should be way faster, but since they had to rush it, there are still some serious performance issues that they've only noticed once they tried it on the actual 8chan data.

It's not the Jews Illuminati, just software engineering.

No.412

>>408
They need to get those "hard drives" that are above solid-states. I forget what they're called but they connect directly to the mo'bo and look a bit like graphics cards. Supposed to be like 4x as fast as a normal hard drive (whereas SSD is 2x fast).

Pci ramdisks? Those are like 10x or faster than ssd's and cost just as much. Though im no expert I remember the frontpage of 4chan and others showing active content size, theyre not over 120GB most of the time so a pci ramdisk while not a bad idea is plainly overkill for the job.

On technical details but nevermind, I dont think anyone except josh knows them. Was just curious about the waiting to write because I thought thats what cache at disk and os level are for.

To begin, have one of the very few YouTube "fitness gurus" who not only has been doing it since before YouTube even existed, but isn't just trying to scam you with BS. His intro video on the front of his channel explains it best. Also, look at him, and realize he's almost 60 years old: HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT!

https://youtube.com/user/scooby1961
http://scoobysworkshop.com

As a child of the Great Depression, he also has posted boatloads of advice on saving money. He's got a few videos on making, for example, exercise equipment for less than $10 from stuff lying around the house and supplies at the local Home Depot that would cost almost $200 bought outright.

No.333

Argh, it didn't save the thread title: "Advice and Self-Improvement" since it kept not accepting an animated GIF.
